Sea Shepherd Conservation Society have launched Operation GrindStop 2014, to curb the hunting of pilot whales in the Danish Faroe Islands and will be utilising drone technology for both surveillance and live streaming of the operation.

Captain Paul Watson has been leading campaigns to prevent the culling - known locally as ‘The Grind’ - since 1985. In 2011, Operation Ferocious Isles prevented any whales from being culled. This year he believes the drone network “will allow us to cover more than two dozen beaches in the Faroes where whales may be killed.”

Watson also indicated that the drones will have a tactical use in detecting the locations of travelling pods of pilot whales. This data will then direct the Society’s boats in warning the whales away from the Islands’ beaches.
