SaveME project is a novel idea that addresses civil security, health, and humanitarian aid, elder and handicap assistance through the simple use of an easily operated small-scale drone.
Imagine you are hiking in a gorge or forest with no internet or mobile phone services and you are lost with no way to communicate with anyone.
Imagine you are in an emergency situation where you are unable to walk or reach for help. Imagine you are in a hazard or disaster event and you need to share information of the situation at hand.
Now imagine you can put wings in your mobile phone to reach for help!
The phone-drone idea was recognized as a revolutionary idea several months ago when our team entered the Copernicus Masters finals with a simpler mobile phone - drone bundle model for mapping and Earth Observation applications. Since then, the dream, requirements and ideas have grown to mature in a novel first aid drone, integrating a mobile phone, the ‘phone-drone’ as we call it.
The basic functionality for the application currently includes four basic concepts:
1. FIND HELP
Through the ‘find help’ button, the drone will fly over the obstacles of the area and will try to assess the last waypoint when mobile services were available. It will track its position and upon reaching a valid service status (mobile broadband connection) it will call for help (e.g. phone, SMS, email, Wi-Fi) with directions for the location of the person in need.
2. BRING MEDICINE
This button is supposed to be customized according to the phone’s owner. The owner registers the required medicines or health problem. Accordingly, maps of subscribed pharmacies are registered on the mobile application. When the unfortunate event of a health problem occurs, either the victim’s stored data or a helping person’s note in the app, will automatically be navigated to the pharmacy which will be informed of the situation.
3. RECORD AND REPORT
In the case of a hazard (earthquake, tsunami, etc.), or a stressful situation (robbery, attack, etc.), this function first records the area of engagement - either automatically or defined by the user - and then navigates or sends the recorded data to a predefined list of contacts including public authorities, police, relatives, fire department, ambulance, etc.
4. WHERE AM I?
This function can be used when a person is lost. The phone-drone will fly over the area and return to the user to provide imagery and waypoints upon e.g. an open-source mobile map in order to assist the user to find their way.
